Tourists attractions in and around Alibaug
Alibaug, the coastal town and the municipal council in Raigad (Kuluba) District in Konkan, Maharashtra, India. It was developed by Sarkhel Kanhoji Aangre, then Naval chief of King Shivaji's Kingdom in 17th Century. A rich man Ali had many gardens (baug) all across the area, hence it is known as Alibaug.
Rewdanda, Nagaon, Chaul, Varsoli, Akshi, Thal, Kihim and Aawas villages were called "Ashtagare" during those days
One of the navybattles was fought between Kanhoji and Siddi of Janjira in 1706. Kuluba Fort in 1722 was jointly attacked by English and Portugese and they had lost this war. In 1730, there was a war between English and Sakhoji at Chaul. Sakhojji had won the battle. Kanhoji had issued silver coins as his own currency and called it Alibaugi Rupaiya.
Khandale a nearby village is surrounded by beautiful Shiva temples. The beauty of the hillocks is breath-taking especially during the July- August when thousands of worshipers crowd the temples. Khandale is also famous for its white onion ( kanda) which has rich Ayurvedic qualities and unique sweet taste.

Alibaug is known for its scenic beauty. The main tourist attraction are the beaches which one cannot miss.
Alibaug Beach - Main beach of the town is ideal for long walks, reasonably clean and has thin crowds during weekdays. Hard sand, black in shade, is quite difficult to build sand castles. One can relax with coconut water to enjoy the fresh air and sandy beach.
Aakshi Beach - 6km away from Alibaug, is a favorite spot for advertising, TV serials and film shoots. Ideal for ladies and children as the sea is flat for a considerable stretch to walk into the sea.
Varsoli Beach- A quite beach with sparkling white sand and clean seawater is a mile away from the main beach. It is relatively less frequented. The Varsoli village has thick coconut and Casuarina vegetation.
Kihim Beach - Kihim is 12km away from Alibaug is a symbol of natural beauty. No pollution zone, surrounded with dense coconut and palm trees is home to rare butterflies, birds and flowers. Clean sea water, thick vegetation all along the shore makes it ideal for photography.
Nagaon Beach - 10km away from Alibaug, is famous for coconut and betel nuts. One can cover Nagaon beach to Aakshi Beach in ten minutes.
Kashid Beach - 36km away on the Alibaug - Murud highway, is possibly the cleanest and the most beautiful beach in the region with almost "white" sand. An ideal place to relax and enjoy the beauty of the tides.
Saswane Beach is peaceful, calm and quiet is meant to relax.
Murud Beach - The water here is clear blue and the sand is silvery white. This is safe for sea bath and water sports. One is usually enthralled by the surroundings during sunset.

Other Attractions 1. Kolaba Fort ( Alibaug Fort): The fort was built by Shivaji Maharaj. It is situated in the sea about 1.5 kms from Alibaug shore and one can walk to the fort during low tide. See Tide Table
